Koi FAQ'S

The average life span for Koi is around 25 to 35 years. The maximum life span can be over 200 years in exceptional cases. Koi can reach 18 inches in 3 to 4 years, depending on the pond size, food, and water conditions, the maximum length is about 3 feet.
Feed your fish once or twice daily depending on the season generally Koi do not eat when the temperatures are around or below 50 degrees and can go for 10 or more days without food without harm. They hibinate during the winter period and can go for months without food. They will eat almost anything but for best results feed them pellets that are specially made for Koi, these pellets come in various sizes and varieties. We stock an asortment at Carpco. Koi can also be fed fresh or dried shrimp, cooked rice, cooked oats, lettuce or watermellon.
Ponds are generally not heated, but the water must be constantly filtered and aerated and cleaned regularly and throughly even though the pond water looks to be clear and clean.

Koi can withstand a wide range of temperatures, but sudden changes in temperatures are not good for them. Koi can survive under the ice in extreme cold as long as the water does not freeze solid. Koi will not move around or eat much if the pond water is very cold.

The selling price of Koi is determined by quality, pattern, size, color, and availability.
Koi are remarkably healthy and hardy fish, much more so than tropical fish or goldfish, but some fish from time to time just die for no real reason, smaller Koi have a much higher mortality rate than larger Koi and are more susceptible to diseases and changes in temperature and the environment. Chemicals like Chlorine or Chloramine in water or windblown or runoff insecticides are obviously very dangerous to Koi.
Generally Koi get along well with other fish like tropical fish or goldfish, make sure though the other fish aren't too aggressive or small enough to eat.
Koi can be kept in aquariums, but it's very important that good filtration and aeration systems are used, also a filter using carbon is also recommended.

Koi require special water conditions and environment for breeding, and must be at least 3 to 4 years old and of sufficient size before they breed, they are not live bearers but lay thousands of eggs in a single breeding. The eggs and baby Koi should be kept separate from the adult Koi or they will probably be eaten. The baby Koi hatch after about 3 to 7 days depending on the weather. The survival rate for baby Koi is less than 50%.
Cats and Birds are natural predators of fish. Cats are not natural swimmers so a minimum 2 foot deep pond helps to prevents this problem. Herons can spot your fish from around 200 feet high but can be discouraged from trying to eat your fish by placing a motion controlled sprinkler systems in the areas where herons could sit.
